About Our Club

In Year 2012, the Oak Run Quilt Club (ORQC) will operate in a more casual format. If you think a more laid-back club setting is for you, come join us as a guest and see what we are all about. The club meets weekly on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Island Club. ORQC is open to all Oak Run residents and dues are $10 annually. New members are always welcome!

With this new laid-back format, there will be no official business meetings. Rather the members themselves will be leading the weekly sessions and/or we will just be sitting and sewing our own projects. We also have a few social activities throughout the year (e.g. holiday parties, field trips).

Our members are at all quilting skill levels from beginners to advanced; traditional quilting to artist quilting; machine quilters and hand quilters. We maintain a very sharing atmosphere within the group and enjoy a lot of learning experiences at our meetings. The members themselves become the teachers! In 2011 we have had lessons on various quilting techniques such as embellishing with fun tread; and numerous appliqué techniques (e.g., Bargello; an African Violet flower, criss-cross diamond, and a painted quilt technique).

If you’re a beginner quilter, Pat Cicogna will be teaching a free beginner’s class (for members only) in February 2012 that involves creating a beautiful quilt. At the end of the classes, you will have become proficient in many techniques.

In addition, we are creating a quilt depicting Marion County. Club members have contributed blocks expressing the various aspects of Marion County. The center of the quilt is a graphic map of the county with the representative blocks surrounding it. Upon its completion in 2012, we hope to have this wall hanging displayed in public places throughout the county.

Come join us! We are a group of friendly women who just love quilting!!!

Community Involvement

ORQC is committed to our community and create quilts for local charitable institutions. Last year we made 20 little bears
and donated them to children in distress through the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. In addition, we participated in
“Quilts for Kids”, a national organization that provides small quilts to children confined to a hospital.

Each year the club produces a raffle quilt with proceeds donated to a local charity. In 2011 we supported Interfaith
Emergency Services. In 2012 we will be working on another charity quilt using the Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern.
